    P4 overclock

    I'm not an overclocking expert.

But i noticed something in my lshw output after upgrading some HW.
    Better see yourself:
    Code:
      *-cpu
           description: CPU
           product: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 1.80GHz
           vendor: Intel Corp.
           physical id: 5
           bus info: cpu@0
           version: 15.1.2
           slot: XU1 PROCESSOR
           size: 1800MHz
           capacity: 3GHz
           width: 32 bits
           clock: 400MHz
capabilities: boot fpu fpu_exception wp vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush dts acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss ht tm up pebs bts
           configuration: id=0
    Look at the capacity (3GHZ).
If i could achieve it, my pc would work a lot better.
Sadly, i'm not an overclock expert (or novice) and don't know how.
    Does anybody know?

    Re: P4 overclock

It is probably running at 1.8GHZ to save power. Under load, it should ramp to 3GHz. Can you post output of:
    Code:
    cpufreq-info

    Re: P4 overclock

I think "capacity" means that the P4 version you have was available at up to 3GHZ. I'm going to take a guess that you have a slow Northwood P4. The fastest Northwood P4 with a 400MHZ FSB runs at 3GHZ, according to Wikipedia:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...icroprocessors

You may be able to overclock depending on your motherboard, but simply upgrading to a faster CPU may be fairly inexpensive and not very difficult. I've upgraded a couple of Pentium 4 computers. Recently I bought a 2.8GHZ Pentium 4 on eBay for $5 USD. To upgrade, you must know the exact specs your motherboard can handle. If it can handle only a 400MHZ FSB (Front Side Bus), your upgrade options are limited (many faster P4s run at 533MHZ or 800MHZ FSB), but you may still be able to find an inexpensive faster CPU.

What are the specs of your computer or motherboard?

    Re: P4 overclock

    Adding the shipping costs...
I'd spend more on the CPU than the entire PC cost me (which i'm not planning to do).

    Re: P4 overclock

I don't think you can overclock very easily with a "brand name" computer like a Compaq/HP. But the good news is, it looks like your Compaq will support a FSB up to 533MHZ, which is great. That improves your upgrade options for a P4 a lot. This shows you what Pentium 4 processors were available in the EVO D310:

    http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/q...11348_div.HTML

You'd want a Socket 478 NORTHWOOD (not Prescott) Pentium 4, with up to a 533MHZ FSB.

You could get up to a 3.06GHZ Pentium 4, but that's probably not going to be cheap.

As I said, I recently paid only $5.00 USD (including shipping) for a used P4 2.8GHZ. That's a pretty cheap upgrade (4 Euros?) for you from 1.8GHZ to 2.8GHZ (and a faster FSB).

There are several versions of the Socket 478 Pentium 4 2.8GHZ 533MHZ, listed here (SL6HL, SL6K6, SL6PF, SL6QB, SL6S4). (You want a NORTHWOOD and *NOT* a PRESCOTT P4 by the way!!!) I got those part numbers here:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...icroprocessors

When I want to find one of these CPUs, I search eBay for the part number. I just searched again and find SL6PF seems to be cheapest: about $6.00 USD in the US. I assume you can search in Europe for cheaper shipping?

The only things to watch out for: you might want to upgrade the BIOS to latest available from HP, before upgrading the CPU. (You might have to do this in Windows or find a boot floppy to handle it - check HP's website.) Also, the cooling fan on the CPU for a 1.8GHZ model may not be adequate for a 2.8GHZ model that generates more heat. Then again, if you were able to overclock it, you'd have the same problem with more heat to worry about. You can try it and see.

Actually i just pulled parts from different PC's and made a new one (the mobo is from a Compaq, the mem from a different pc (brandless)).

Again, upgrading is not a viable option.
I paid 30 euros for the entire pc, and the CPU+shipping would be too expensive.

    Re: P4 overclock

its would defiantly a worth while and inexpensive upgrade. im currently slowly building/modifying a computer using socket 478. i upgraded from from a slow 2.0ghz celeron to a northwood 2.8 and the performance gains were very noticeable. although i later discovered through the terminal window that because of the motherboard i had it was restricting the clock speed to 2.1 but i was still having the gains of the upgraded cache and fsb speeds tho. meant that i now have swopped for a motherboard that can support the faster cpu and the clock speed now reads 2.8 and is even faster!
all i did was google the p/n on the motherboard and look at the spec and what it is capable of supporting

My point being i'd rather not spend any money (my other pc's cost me exactly 0 euro, take the broken* pc's others give me and combine them in good working pc's),
i checked some stuff and it appears as if it should be possible to overclock it.

    * I even once got a perfectly fine system whose only problem was that the dvd-drive never opens on the first try.

    Re: P4 overclock

Ok, so it appears you have a 1.8GHz Northwood (since Compaq Evo D310 was Socket 478). See: http://www.sharkyextreme.com/guides/...709_1380951__1

Don't expect 3GHz though. 2.4 is more reasonable.
