Installation failure

I have downloaded several versions of Ubantu to install onn my machine. None have worked. The current version I have is 10.04.3, 32 bit, booting from a cd. I have no idea what is going on. could someone give me some idea about how to install so I at least have some feedback from tyhe installation process - at the moment all I get is a screen that says Ubantu with some dots below the text, then the machine restarts or the screen goes blank.

Ok. Ubantu is broken. At least for me. Thanks for all the help.

Just for your information, the defect is:
"BUG: Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at (null)".

And the message prior to the defect is "last sysfs file: /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:0b.1/usb1/serial"

I suggest prior to an OS being marked stable that it actually be stable. How frustrating. I have spent over a week trying to get this far.

I have a similar issue; I cannot get Ubuntu 11.10 to install - the installation just hangs.
Interestingly, I can install any other flavour of Linux except Ubuntu
I also have no idea what is going on, it is very frustrating
