    It was encrypted using eCryptFS, the one that came with Ubuntu.

    So I went with YannBuntu's advice to just upgrade. It copied over some config files (ThunderBird and others, including Chrome). The re-install caused me to not be able to log in, but was fixed by http://askubuntu.com/questions/65852...y-user-account.

    I've lost all the applications and software that I've downloaded from what I can tell, including Chrome and it's bookmarks and whatnot (computer broke before I logged onto Chrome and could keep bookmarks).

    If you are using encryption you have to have a very good backup policy. The purpose of encryption is to prevent recovery of data from a device. So good backups are your only way to salvage data after system issues.

    I like rsync but do not know if encryption creates any issues.
