    Question Nvidia HDMI sound

Work around solution on next page as well as a hdmi audio solution (solution varies with kernel version and GPU)

a while back i disabled the sound part of the nvidia driver by blacklisting it in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

this is my disabled hdmi sound code
    Code:
    # nvidia hdmi audio is disabled so apps will use the correct audio output
    blacklist snd_hda_codec_nvhdmi
    this would enable it right?
    Code:
    # nvidia hdmi audio is disabled so apps will use the correct audio output
    # blacklist snd_hda_codec_nvhdmi
any way i have modprobed it and it still will not load the sound driver
    this is from lspci -vv

    Re: Nvidia HDMI sound

The module setup is pre-compiled into boot image. Changing the text files does not trigger the image update.
You update the boot image by:
    sudo update-initramfs -u

Any kernel update or other package managed kernel module update will trigger this..

    Re: Nvidia HDMI sound

Did you use a probe mask value with snd-hda-intel module?
This was a common hack in the near past..

    Check in /etc/modprobe.d/*.conf files..

    dmesg | grep HDA

i did figure out if i use natty's backboard kernel i get the hdmi port under sound devices (running lucid with maveric's backpacked kernel)
but even then it still would not give me sound with alsamixer unmuted but it could just be the wire is bad will have new wire later this week

    Re: Nvidia HDMI sound

    Your modprobe.d/*.conf files look okay.

    Are you using 10.04 ?
If you are using 10.04 then you have to use iQuik ppa to get user-space alsa 1.0.24.

You do not need to update the kernel modules (leave them at 1.0.23) for GT220/240/430 HDMI audio.

There is no maverick ppa for alsa 1.0.24 user-space.

I seem to recall that the backports kernel stops the iQuik ppa fix from working.

You will need to check if the nVidia driver supports your card.
You can update from xorg-edgers or x-swat team ppa.

    speaker-test -c 2 -r 48000 -D hw:0,0

    Re: Nvidia HDMI sound

The module setup is pre-compiled into boot image. Changing the text files does not trigger the image update.
You update the boot image by:
    sudo update-initramfs -u

using 10.04 with 10.10 kernel backport for TRIM support it has a GTX 550 TI
    using xswat ppa

do i need to add the ppa:team-iquik/alsa ppa?

    -----------
i have another system with 10.04 and a GT 430 using the xswat ppa and no back-ported kernel does that one just need that ppa?

sadly any testing will be delayed till Friday when my new hdmi cable gets here

    Re: Nvidia HDMI sound

The general consensus is that user-space alsa 1.0.24 is minimum for working HDMI audio.
(ELD reporting, HDA audio modes, all pin codecs exposed)

That does not explain the original problem.
The snd-hda-intel driver should still be loaded for the audio h/w.
If the h/w is not recognised then some kernel component must be too old.
