Ubuntu and Java

I am trying to access a website that needs Java to run. I have downloaded the self-extracting file to install Java, but cannot get the the install to work. I downloaded the instructions and cannot get the terminal program to let me change to the directory that contains the bin file for Java.

Try getting open-jdk, search online for it. It's much easier than anything else.

Don't download it as a file from the Sun website as this is a big challenge

No need to search online, you can get that straight from Ubuntu Software Centre.

If, as often happens (unfortunately), the website does not support OpenJDK, I recommend the following tutorial for getting Sun Java.

Not so much of a chore as some would have you think.

Icedtea doesn't work either? That's what comes with ubuntu-restricted-extras.

I agree, i got jre buy installing restricted extras.
