    Broadcom 4311 / Oneiric / Dell Latitude d820 > no wireless

    Hi all

This installation had wireless working before - I had a strange shutdown failure last week involving ecryptfs, and after recoverying from it everything works fine except wireless.

Broadcom STA driver (proprietary) installed and activated from the additional drivers menu.
lsmod shows that only wl kernel module is installed, not b43, ssb which are, I understand, the free drivers and which the proprietary one conflicts with.

    However lspci shows:
    Kernel modules: wl, ssb

I've tried rmmod ssb and get error:
ERROR: Module ssb doesn't exist in /proc/modules
Also tried blacklisting it in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf and it's still loaded at boot time.

GUI panel doesn't show that wireless is enabled.
ip addr / iwconfig doesn't show that there is a wlan interface, just loopback and ethernet

    Questions
    1. How do I get my wireless working? The hang up seems to be removing ssb module
I already tried b43-cutter and it didn't work
    2. Is there anything I'm missing here?

    Thanks!

STA will not work with 11.04 or 11.10 with the bcm4311. To enable it you will need the b43 driver. To do so correctly just
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter firmware-b43-installer
To disable the wl module from the STA driver you installed previously, just
    Code:
    sudo modprobe -r wl
Then to enable the b43, just
    Code:
    sudo modprobe b43
To make sure you disable the wl module permanently just
    Code:
    gksudo gedit /etc/modules
and make sure b43 IS listed and wl is NOT listed. Then
    Code:
    gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
    and add
    Code:
    blacklist wl
to the end of the list in that file. Save and enjoy.

Alternatively to black- and whitelisting, just deactivate the STA driver and/or uninstall it:

    Code:
    sudo apt-get remove --purge bcmwl-kernel-source
after installing the firmware as described.

    This looks great!

    However,

    Code:
    sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer 0
    Reading package lists... Done
    Building dependency tree
    Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package firmware-b43-installer
I have all the default repos in my sources.list ...

Did you try enabling the partner repository in the software sources app? And any others that could apply? Not sure which it is located in. And don't forget to
    Code:
    sudo apt-get update
    first

The partners repository was enabled, in fact I enabled all repositories including restricted and multiverse, except for pre-release proposed and unsupported backports.
and did apt-get update, and still got the same error message when running
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer
I could probably get the .deb archive somewhere and install it to solve the original problem, but it seems like this part shouldn't be happening.

Which Ubuntu version is that? "firmware-b43-installer" if from Natty and on.

You are in good hands, but here is the entire methodology for the BCM4311 in case it is needed.

Ok, I have two issues ..
    1. Could the ssb module be conflicting, or if b43 is already installed what would the problem be? This is the most pressing issue for me.
    2. why can't my computer apt-get the package for firmware-b43-installer like everyone else? (this may be a moot point now ..)
    3. If b43 is already in use as the commands below indicate, do I even need it?

    Kernel driver in use: b43-pci-bridge
    Kernel modules: ssb

    Code:
    me@mymachine:~$ lsmod | grep b43 100

    Hi,

    can you show:

    Code:
    lsmod #completely
    dmesg | grep b43
    rfkill list
