Empathy and Skype not making a sound

...upon incoming events, that is.
I can hear Skype dialling when I make an outgoing call and voice audio is fine in both directions during a call.
There is just no sound for incoming call or IM, and the same is true for Empathy IM.
I have Pulse Audio for system wide sound, and it's set as audio device in Skype settings (no alternative there, actually).
In Empathy, this isn't explicitly available as a setting, however, I made sure sounds are enabled for incoming messages.

How can I find out what is causing this?

Thanks, but I'm afraid none of this helps me fix my problem.

- The info in the first post helps if your *mic* doesn't work, but my mic is fine.

Like I said, the problem is of on *output* nature.

- The other two seem to be dealing with more basic problems, like no sound at all, sound card not working, ubuntu not liking sound card or vice versa etc.

I do get perfectly fine sound though, except for these two applications and then *only* in the case of incoming call or IM.
