Unhappy 11.10 does not recognize Synaptics Touchpad

I am trying to setup Ubuntu 11.10 on my Dell Inspiron laptop running under VMWare Player (Ver 4 and uptodate). The Laptop is model N5010 with 4G running Win 7 Home Premium, SP1.

11.10 does not seem to recognize the touchpad (Synaptics V7.2) which is important if you used Multitouch gestures (which obviously I do). No tab on Mouse settings screen.

    jhowes@ubuntu:~$ xinput list
    ⎡ Virtual core pointer
⎜ ↳ Virtual core XTEST pointer
⎜ ↳ VMware VMware Virtual USB Mouse
⎜ ↳ VMware VMware Virtual USB Mouse
    ⎜ ↳ ImPS/2 Generic Wheel Mouse
    ⎣ Virtual core keyboard
    ↳ Virtual core XTEST keyboard
    ↳ Power Button
↳ AT Translated Set 2 keyboard
    jhowes@ubuntu:~$

I googled around and found some talk but no solutions. One post indicated this was an issue with Synaptics not disclosing protocols so that the Ubuntu developers could reliably detect/support.

Is there a workaround? Or solution?

    Thanks.

Since you've installed Ubuntu on a virtual computer, Ubuntu can only see the virtual hardware, as implemented by VMware.

Synaptics Touchpads work relatively well when Ubuntu is installed on real hardware.
