I got a call from an overseas number...

...and they told me something along the lines of: "you have a virus on your windows computer that got in through your e-mail." it was in a foreign accent.

it made me laugh because i havent even used the windows installation on my other partition for over a month now.

i replied: "i can tell this is a scam because none of my computers run windows"

    they hung up.

the number was 011-425-8891. looking that up revealed that they are in south africa.

    anyone have any similar experinces?

Ha, once I received a call which clearly was made from a pub (noise of drunks and background music) claiming I'm eligible for free money from government. Before they could tell me how much I have to pay to get free money I told them there is no such thing as free money. That really pissed her off, she elevated her voice trying to explain something but I hung up. Hope she trashed her phone in anger.

As was said in a previous thread, some of these scammers' call centres are actually using their local mobile phone network. Therefore if you avoid actually hanging up, you may be able to block them from dialling out again.
I try to treat the cause, not the symptom. I avoid the terminal in instructions, unless it's easier or necessary. My instructions will work within the Ubuntu system, instead of breaking or subverting it. Those are the three guarantees to the helpee.
