gufw on ubuntu 10.04, how to control programs?

    Ubuntu10.04
I've installed gufw. I read, that best use is to deny in and outgoing,
and then allow outgoing connections for those programs, which should have
    internet access.
But how to give a program internet access?

Fx. if settings are deny both outgoing and incoming connections, firefox doesn't work.
Then how do you set firefox to get outgoing connection?

And which other programs should have outgoing permissions?

    Thanks.

I never deny outgoing connects. I see not much harm in them. I do deny incoming connections in general and then open certain ports, if I need them.

I read that what can happen is, virus takes over a program and uses the programs permission to
access the internet in order to do its thing.
Making deny outgoing connections default, makes that more difficult for virus.
On top of that you can investigate what programs are accessing the internet.
