11.04 tried upgrade to gnome 3 but an issue came up

installed 11.04
the tried to install gnome shell
but left some icons messed up on panel top
and the gdm does not list gnome shell as a selection

then went to update manager and it offered a partial upgrade
so started that and its 256mb
so curious what to do now as would rather just upgrade to 11.10

got it all working on 11.10 with gnome shell
I had to reinstall 11.04, then upgrade to 11.10
