Question Update my android phone under Ubuntu?

    Hi all,

I try to update my android phone (Samsung Galaxy SII) when I using Ubuntu 10.10. I tried to install KIES (with Wine) but it wont work and I don't know how to update my phone.

    Any ideas?

    Best Regards,

Most updates are available OTA (Over the Air) and you can ignore Kies. If you some specific update that is not OTA you can mount the phone in USB mass storage mode, copy the file to your SD card and most thing can be run from the phone if you are rooted. Need more details.

    You're out of luck:

Apart from that, like bobsageek indicated most of the updates are done over the air.

By update do you mean updrade the OS/firmware?
AFAIK you can install android upgrades from the SD card, so you just need to copy the firmware to the sd.
Try to google, for example this guide is one of the results.

At the moment I don't have any SD card and I install only official firm-s on my Galaxy SII...

At the moment I'm with 2.3.4 and I want to check if there is newer official version.

What you want can be initiated from the phone, you don't need Kies, which from past experience is quite awful when it does decide to work.

Re: Update my android phone under Ubuntu?

I ran into the same problem with upgrade of Samsung Galaxy S2 from Gingerbread (stock) to Ice Cream Sandwich. I ended up having to dust off my Window's netbook and do it through windows because Samsung decided to make the Kies application the only way to upgrade the OS. I couldn't get it to work in Wine, can't use Kies Air, must use the Kies app in Windows. PITA for sure, but they've got their reasons I guess.

Be sure to backup everything before you do the install because you end up doing a full reset and everything gets wiped except the SD card!

    Good luck.

Use whatever OS or desktop works for you. Dual boot or use VMs if you want. Backup your computer regularly, and definitely before upgrading, partitioning, or installing an OS.
