Audio input quality never the same after upgrade

My first (home) production Ubuntu system was 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope). Under Jaunty Jackalope, My sound application could distinguish the front and rear microphones and the speaker(rear)/headphone jacks.

After I upgraded to Lucid Lynx (10.04) and each subsequent upgrade (I am now on 11.10), I've not only lost the distinction of my audio ports, the recording / microphone quality is awful. I cannot use my computer for SKYPE, and my vinyl LP recordings with Audicity sounds awful.

I am not an extremely technical Linux user, but I can follow directions pretty well. I tried moving to OSS, but it may have been written for an earlier version of Ubuntu and I lost all sound controls... The only fix was upgrading from 11.04 to 11.10.

I do not want to use my office computer (Windows 7) for skype or transferring my vinyl to MP3. Any help would be most welcome. For those who can help, please be specific in what I should provide.

    Thanks!
