How to setup PS3 Controller on Ubuntu 11.10

I've Google and checked YouTube to set up my controller to on ubuntu...unfortunately i haven't been able to find something that works or that does not revolve around BT. my desktop doesn't have BT so the ones that looked promising couldn't help much

ps3 controller should work via usb without needing to install anything

i ahve it connected the emulators dont recognize it when i try to assign the keys to it

BUMP. In all the threads I've read about this problem, everybody stops responding and no answer is given. I've had this problem on MULTIPLE separate computers and MULTIPLE different versions of ubuntu and between TWO different PS3 Dualshock3 Controllers. Why is nothing happening when assigning buttons? The computer acts as if no button was pressed.
