Unhappy Can't Boot From USB Drive

I have a white-unibody Macbook running as the main and only OS Ubuntu 11.10 (and yes, it's blessed). I do not want to come back to OS X and even if I did can't right now because for about a month won't have access to installation CD.

Anyways, I want to run BackTrack 5 from a USB drive and have done the procedure as stated in the backtrack site to create a live thumbdrive. My problem is that my macbook won't recognize the drive. Debian BIOS also won't recognize usb.

I need to find a way to be able to boot from the USB.. Help is highly appreciated.

Have you tried to use Plop boot manager?
It's a free boot manager. Download from their website the iso and burn it as a bootable cd, boot your Macbook from the CD (with the USB thumbdrive inserted), then choose to boot from USB.
