Looking for a ubuntu-based distro which offers "pure" DE's.

Hi there, I'm currently looking for a lightweight distribution which is based on Ubuntu which uses XFCE or LXDE as it's Desktop Environment. The problem with the current Lubuntu 11.10 release is that it's got a load of XFCE packages in there and Xubuntu is filled with GNOME bloat.

I would choose Fedora, but I use a lot of PPA's for various programs not in the official Ubuntu repos.

    Any suggestions?

Do a minimal install then install LXDE

Does the minimal image support USB booting?

    Yes.

At least I'm pretty sure I've done a minimal install on a cd/dvd less netbook.

Correct. I did a minimal install of 11.10 off a USB flash stick for my system. I just wrote the alternate install .iso to a usb stick using dd and booted off it.

Use the mini iso and then install the DE's packages rather than the *ubuntu-desktop packages.
