2.6.38.13 kernel update broke lirc for me

So, I ran some upgrades, one of which was a kernel update to 2.6.38.13 generic. My remote wasn't working on a reboot. I got nothing from it with irw or evtest. I checked the input number for the Hauppauge card and switched the device from a symlink to the specific name, and whatever else I could think of, but the only thing that gave me input from the remote was disabling LIRC.

So, as a temporary fix, I used startup-manager to default to 2.6.38.12 and everything was fine again. However, I don't want to be stuck at a specific kernel forever. Does anyone know what happened with the kernel update and how can I update and retain LIRC?

I don't know what happened but I suggest you 2 options.

    1. You wait until the next kernel update, hopping this time will work, or
    2. You download next kernel by yourself (you can use the Ubuntu kernel PPA) and try to install it.

    I wish you luck.

Thanks for the advice and support. Do you think something went wrong with the update; is that why you suggest installing it manually?

It's no so uncommon to have a bad kernel update. The trouble is that fixing the problem is almost impossible, that's why I suggest you to at least wait to the next update. To install a new kernel by yourself is not so easy task.

Well, thanks for the suggestions. I guess I wait, then. I'm sure you're right since googling turned up nothing for me and no one has thrown in on this thread.
