    Grub problems

Hi, I repartitioned my 500GB HD. 100GB for Puppy full install and in the process can't get Lucid LTS to start.
So I'm typing this on Lucid's live CD. I reformatted the 100GB partition; it's now empty.
I can mount Lucid and open/rescue my home folder. I've a recent 'Simple Backup' on an external HD. I've also studied answers to this question on another forum in this group, but too complicated for me.It seems that I'm unable to locate the needed repository via Synaptic Package.
I'm wondering if there's a way to repair a menu list or whatever - as I can access the files.
'Simple Reinstall' seems a bit drastic, and how's it done from outside the computer.
I do hope someone can help. I've had so much help over the past years, freely and promptly given, that I'm suprised to see harsh criticism from quite a few. A New Zealander, no less, suggested that you close down!
    Cheers sarum.

So what happens when you try to start lucid? More information is needed, it is possible that the original drive was partitioned incorrectly.

Re: I've killed Grub, I think

well, I remember something called a SuperGrub disk that would repair a nonworking grub. That might be your easiest fix.

Re: I've killed Grub, I think

Partition was done before all this was done.
I installed a thing called 'GAG' to help, but it didn't.
GAG is all I get on start up. Thanks for your reply............sarum

PS. I digress, but all this use of live CD; it all dies on reboot.
I remember 'persistent' and his/her(?) friend 'casper-cow', are they no longer with us.

    Re: Grub problems

Hi Sarum, I need to ask just incase it helps, if your having GRUB problems I assume that this is on boot?

If this is the case then have you run "update-grub" under sudo or root in a terminal?

this reassembles the grub record with any partition changes that may have been made, the other cause maybe the fact that your grub boot loader may be installed on the wrong partition.

Not sure if this will help entirely but please let me know

    Regards,

    Jumpy

When you turn on your computer, what happens? Could you run the bootinfo script? See this page: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1291280

What is GAG? I couldn't find anything with that name in the repository.

    Re: Grub problems

    update-grub result:-
/usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?)

As to GAG; I found it while extensive Googling. I don't think it was from this forum. It's now all I get when booting without a CD.

    Thankyou both for your replies...........sarum

Re: I've killed Grub, I think

Gordintoronto thanks for that link. I've run it and have huge print out. I don't know if I should copy it all out here?
    Part of it reads:-
    sda1: __________________________________________________ ________________________

    File system: ext4
    Boot sector type: Grub Legacy
Boot sector info: Grub Legacy (v0.97) is installed in the boot sector
of sda1 and looks at sector 333119 of the same hard
drive for the stage2 file. A stage2 file is at this
location on /dev/sda. Stage2 looks on the same
    partition for /boot/grub/menu.lst.
    Operating System: Ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS
    Boot files: /boot/grub/menu.lst /boot/grub/grub.cfg /etc/fstab
    /boot/grub/core.img....no more room sarum

    Re: Grub problems

Sorry I should have given myself more room. Another part is:-

    # GRUB configuration file '/boot/grub/menu.lst'.
    # generated by 'grubconfig'. Thu Nov 24 17:24:18 2011
    #
    # The backup copy of the MBR for drive '/dev/sda' is
    # here '/boot/grub/mbr.sda.8118'. You can restore it like this.
    # dd if=/boot/grub/mbr.sda.8118 of=/dev/sda bs=512 count=1
    #
    # Start GRUB global section
    #timeout 30
    color light-gray/blue black/light-gray
    # End GRUB global section
    # Linux bootable partition config begins
    title Linux (on /dev/sda1).

    Result of copy/paste....dd if=/boot/grub/mbr.sda.8118 of=/dev/sda bs=512 count=1

    "ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ dd if=/boot/grub/mbr.sda.8118 of=/dev/sda bs=512 count=1
dd: opening `/boot/grub/mbr.sda.8118': No such file or directory"

I hope this helps. I seem to have got my message mixed with my quotes, I hope you can understand it..........sarum

sarum, just copy the entire output and paste it here and enclose it in code tags.
