Can't log into Ubuntu 11.04

I recently dual-booted my HP G61 laptop with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.04. Both of them worked for a week, but then when I selected ubuntu from GRUB, instead of being taken to the login screen - all I saw was this:

BusyBox v1.17.1 (Ubuntu 1:17.1-10ubuntu1) built-in she'll (ash) Enter 'help' to see a list of built-in commands.

I haven't been able to access my Desktop. Could someone please tell me what to do to get everything back to normal.

Mind you, i'm a beginner so please go easy on the techy-terms.

Essentially, something's gone wrong between booting and loading the GUI. (the 'pointy clicky' interface).

ash is a shell, a bit like the one in a terminal normally.

Suggestions:

-does any text flash by before it gets to the 'busybox' bit?

-have you changed anything before it did this?

It says

Target system doesn't have /sbin/init.

I didn't make any changes to the system settings. I only installed a video player and eclipse.

do you have any previous kernels , If yes try to boot from there .
