    Re: Sound troubleshooting

My audio recently stopped working. I upgraded from 13.04 to 14.04 about a week ago, and everything was working fine.
Yesterday I was using Rhythmbox (which I don't normally use) to listen to some music. I was adding a bunch of files to Rhythmbox's library, and the audio suddenly stopped working. Rhythmbox froze, so I closed it, (I think I may have gotten an error message related to Pulseaudio around this time, but didn't think to take note), and when I reopened it the sound still didn't work. Sound also stopped working in VLC. I figured I had just crashed Pulseaudio, and that a reboot would fix it, but still nothing.

I went through the troubleshooting steps posted above with no luck.

Here's the output of running the alsa information script, if that helps:

    Re: Sound troubleshooting

I've installed Ubuntu 14.10 on a Toshiba Satellite P50-BBT2G22, but I can't get the sound to work. I've kept the Windows 8 partition alive for warranty purposes, and sound works perfectly there. Using "ubuntu-bug -s audio" in the Terminal, it said that PulseAudio was not configured to use the card I want output from (Built-In Audio - HDA Intel HDMI), but pavucontrol hasn't helped anyway (in pavucontrol, under Configuration tab, all options under Built-In Audio claim that they are unplugged [ 3 options say "Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output (unplugged)", 3 more options say "Digital Surround 5.1 (HDMI) output (unplugged)" and an "Off" option]).

Data on alsainfo and other files are at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...x/+bug/1404589 . I submitted it as a bug a few days ago, but it hasn't had any action since then.

    Can anyone help?

EDIT: Going through the troubleshooting at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/So...otingProcedure

I came across this (during Step 3):

    !!ALSA Version
    !!------------

    Driver version: k3.16.0-29-generic
    Library version: 1.0.28
    Utilities version: 1.0.28

Is it a problem that they're not all the same?

    HDMI audio problems

I have been running Mythbuntu for several years, and I recently did a clean install of 14.04.
HDMI audio works fine in Mythtv, but I can't get it to work with anything else. I want to use VLC, XBMC, etc in addition to Mythtv.
    I have a NVidia 610 video card.

In Mythtv setup, the audio device that works is ALSA:hdmi:CARD=NVidia,DEV=1

When I was running 12.04, I got all the audio working by setting the default audio device by using:
    pacmd list-sinks
    pacmd set-default-sink

    When I run pacmd list-sinks in 14.04 i get
    Code:
Welcome to PulseAudio! Use "help" for usage information.

I have made sure nothing is muted in alsamixer, I have tried many different setting combinations in PulseAudio volume control and still can't get this to work.
Weird thing is, 2 different times I got audio in XBMC and thought I had it fixed, but the next time I opened it I had no sound. I don't want to wreck the audio in Mythtv, so I hate to change much without getting some advice first. Can anyone help me troubleshoot this problem?

    Re: Sound troubleshooting

    Hello
I have carefully followed all the sound troubleshooting procédure.
I am in Xubuntun 14.04. As a consequence of following the multiple advices in these procedures, I have many new things in my menu, no more access to synaptic and many other problems.
Then I found on Internet the following page written by canonical whose title is "top-five-wrong-ways-to-fix-your-audio"
    dhttp://voices.canonical.com/david.henningsson/2012/07/13/top-five-wrong-ways-to-fix-your-audio/o.

Almost all these things are included in the troubleshooting procedure. It seems to me it is a real problem.
My configuration is broken. I am going to re-instal it from scratch and I will not follow the troubleshootingprocedures.

I think I got my problem solved.
    I disabled PulseAudio
    Code:
    echo autospawn=no > ~/.pulse/client.conf
    pulseaudio -k
I seem to be getting audio everywhere I need it now
I have no idea if this breaks something else, but it works for me so far

    Re: Sound troubleshooting

    Hi there.

I've followed the guide at the start of this thread but whatever I do I can't get my Traktor Audio 6 card to work since installing 15.04 (it worked with no special setup in 14.10).

I posted on AskUbuntu here, http://askubuntu.com/questions/64553...-15-04-upgrade

Sound is fine via the onboard card, but not via my external. If I run `pactl list` I see all my cards listed, and if I run `aplay -l` I see my cards correctly, but they don't show up in the sound selection app on the system menu bar.

If I run alsamixer and select the card I want to use, all channels for the card are shown as disabled. See screenshot below.

I tried creating an /etc/asound.conf file as per the sticky guide but that didn't help.

I'm not sure where to go next. Any ideas?

    Thanks!

    Ludo

    Hello,
Pronunciation sounds of both online dictionaries "www.wordreference.com" and "thefreedictionary.com" stopped working a few months ago. Other media (e.g. Youtube) are going on working.
Might it be caused by Ubuntu versions 14.10 and 15.4? I have Installed OpenJDK Java Runtime instead of Java downloaded from Orange? Might it matter?

    Now sound is working again.
Yesterday I installed some Ubuntu updates, I suppose this is the reason
