Sound troubleshooting

I'm trying to use a Logitech H530 usb headset on my Thinkpad Edge13 running ubuntu 12.04 64 bit, and the automatic mic gain keeps pushing the mic volume to 100% [so, the volume is WAY too loud and picks up lots of background noise etc], even as I've turned it down in alsamixer and pulseaudio. I've searched, but been unable to find anything about how to disable the auto mic gain or otherwise fix this problem.
sound card is:

Much like many folks on ye olde internets, I seem to have no sound at all. I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 and I just updated it today to the most recent packages.

My sound card is recognized just fine (Creative Labs CA0106 Soundblaster). Alsamixer runs and nothing is muted (everything is at 100%. there is no auto-mute option on my version). aplay -l shows my card just fine and it seems to be okay. pavucontrol runs fine and i see my stuff. Under configuration I've tried all the potions. I tend to stick with Amalog Stero Duplex for testing (I'm using logitech sl21 speakers).

Everything seems to be as it should. Yes no sound.

The speakers work fine (tested on my phone, they sound great). I can get sound just fine out of usb speakers, but I'd rather use my actual sound card (it's a card, not on board. my mobo has no on board sound).

It's never worked on 12.04.

Suggestions?

I tried the troubleshooting but it didn't seem to fix my issue and (sorry if this is noobish) trying to copy a file into /etc only yielded an error message, so I couldn't make an asound.conf file. Ok, that being said, here's my issue.

I have a Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium card and am running 12.04 LTS 64-bit. At the login screen the bongos play and the audio shows that it's working. After logging in the sound stops working, and I have to type the following in the terminal:

gstreamer-properties

Which then brings up a box where I can select "ALSA" or "Pulse Audio" as the driver and then manually select "Front/WaveIn" for the device. This works and I am able to get audio from the card. Additionally, if I right click on Sound Settings, the Sound Blaster X-Fi is there once again. If I look at Sound Settings before I use the gstreamer command, it's blank. Problem is, I'm having to do this EVERY time I log in. There has to be a better way. I'm not a noob with Linux, but I'm not a superuser either. Any help on how I can get these values to load at startup would be appreciated.

I'm having sound issues with 12.04 as well.
I have no output at all in sound settings.
Alsamixer gives me only the build in chip with HDMI output, while gstreamer-properties and pulseaudio volume control gives me the other sound card I have, but still no output. What the hell happened?

I followed several problem solving guides but anything seems to work. I've been looking for someone with my same problem for two days, but i didn't find anything similar. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 two days ago and i had only an audio problem. When i start my pc i can hear music and watch videos for a while, but after a minute or two, Rhythmbox, Amarok, VLC, or any music reader stops working, and i cannot watch videos on youtube because the slide stops (neither on dailymotion). But the strangest thing is that all seemed to be all right when i tried to use the terminal commands to check the sound card and alsamixer.

Is there anyone that could help me to solve the problem?

No audio HDMI. GEFORCE GTX 660Ti from MSI. It just came out so, not sure if it's supported yet. Any ideas? hdmi audio is my only option for sound. I tried reading through those pdf files but could never get aplay to recognize the device or card or whatever.

Edit: Also note that there were no hardware drivers available so I installed them manually from Nvidia's site, which worked great for video over hdmi, but no audio yet.
