Unhappy Ubuntu 11.10 not using more than 500MB RAM

    Hi all,
    I installed Ubuntu 11.10 (64bit) on my netbook (Medion Akoya E1228 ) with Intel Atom N570 1.66GHz (64bit), and 2GB RAM.

Whenever I am using application which need huge RAM (e.g. OpenOffice, PDF manipulators, especially - Thunderbird) the system is not using more than 500MB RAM, even if the system goes crazy and doesn't respond, everything gets stuck, but Ubuntu is still using around 480MB-500MB, however the CPU usage is at its peak.

I checked the system info, and it shows 2GB RAM, even on startup, and everywhere else 2GB is shown.
Is there some problem with the memory accessibility? Why Ubuntu can't use more than 500MB RAM.

Kindly guide me if there is any trick to let Ubuntu know that there is alot more RAM available.
