Question Can't shutdown and Boot question

I posted this in the wrong spot originally.

I'm not a pro at Linux, but I'm a bit farther into Linux than my feet.

I've installed 11.10 on my laptop, from a LiveCD. The problem I have is that I can't shutdown the computer. I select shutdown, but it takes me to the login screen. If I login again, I only get the menu bar at the top of the screen. Is there something I'm missing?

I installed the Startup Manager. I selected my Windows loader to be the default. When I hard shut down the laptop and bootup, The menu is the same as before with Ubuntu highlighted. Was it the hard reboot that hosed that? How would I set the Windows loader as default boot?

My video card is an Nvidia Quadro FX 3600M 512MB.

    Thanks!

Ok, it seems (right now) it doesn't like having a laptop on a docking station. After removing it, it was fine. Whew lol.
