Xinerama + compositor clones screen instead of extending it

I just post this for reference for others. My problem with Unity and Xubuntu was the following:
I have a four-screen setup, using two graphics cards. To make one desktop for this, I use xinerama with the proprietary drivers.

The problem I encountered with Unity2D (unity3d won't work at all), is that the top-left screen would be cloned across all four screens. After tying out different window managers and desktop environments, I found out that Xubuntu also gives this problem. Gnome has other problems/limitations.

I solved this by turning off Composite. Now I have one huge desktop, like I wanted.
