Exclamation Monitor only shows "Out of Range"

My desktop running 11.10 has had problems during startup, it would display "out of range input2"
    "46.3kHz/44Hz"
on the lcd display instead of the startup screen. Then it went to normal.

Now it won't go back to normal, it stays on the "out of range" screen. I try to get to the grub boot screen, but holding shift only shows "Grub loading...", then out of range screen. I also tried Ctrl+Alt+F2, it doesn't show anything. Maybe because it is an ATI graphics card?

Probably, but how would you set it?

Later I started it up without the monitor plugged in, plugging in the monitor showed the debian grub boot, and I was able to successfully go to recovery mode, then continue boot normally.
