    That thread was right on; it seems to have been a problem with the kernel. I followed these instructions to upgrade to the 2.6.38 kernel and my IDE drive now seems to be mounting perfectly.

    The kernel update caused other problems (apparently this kernel is a little more finicky with Nvidia drivers than the previous one I was using), but these were again pretty easily solved.

    This makes me very happy! Thank you, dabl, for mentioning BIOS; I wouldn't have done a motherboard-specific search without it.

    Huh -- I have that Marvell SATA 6 Gb/s controller on my Asus P6X58D-E mobo. But I have never tried to connect an IDE drive -- I don't think it has an IDE connector.

    A little late but I like to add that when using two HDDs,

    the PC will incorporate both drives by slowing down the pair to the older drives speed.
