Sorry, not here to offer a solution, but merely to chime in on the benefits of RAID on a desktop machine.
While running a RAID1 array may give you a increased sense of reliability, the real plus to a RAID is increased drive speed. I've been running a RAID0 array on four 500Mb SATA drives for the past three years, and I'll never go back to the seemingly slow world of a single drive. The major drawback is that the RAID0 'wastes' quite a bit of overall space (I end up with a 1.6Tb partition), but the write speeds are around 760Mb/sec! Can't beat that with a stick.
