This post is simply to praise Xubuntu and the Xfce desktop environment in Ubuntu linux. Since Ubuntu and other major linux distros have adopted Gnome 3/Unity or KDE rather than offering a more straightforward desktop environment such as Gnome 2 for getting work done, I have been testing a number of linux distros and desktop environments. I had thought that Linux Mint was the answer until I tested version 12. Today I installed Xubuntu, and I was delighted to find that it just worked right out of the box. No tweaking was required, although I elected to move everything from the top panel to the bottom panel and delete the top panel. Now I am ready to work again. I would like to thank the developers and urge them to stick with the excellent Xfce environment rather than being tempted to inflate the system to something unworkable, such as Gnome 3, Unity, or KDE. Thank you!
