    Exclamation Acpi help

    Hi, over the past year or so, I have tried often to resolve this issue, I have searched for a long time, and so forth, but I really just need some FIX
    here's the problem...
    I can only boot using acpi=off
    which I think is a bad deal to turn it off completely.
    I have tried NUMEROUS other options...
    acpi=force
    noacpi
    noapic
    nolapic
    acpi=oldboot
    acpi=ht
    pci=routeirq
    and many others....

    SO, HOW do I find out what the problem is?
    I ran "sudo dmidecode" (SEE attachment)
    and found my BIOS supports acpi, so I would like to know what else I can do, how I can fix this, or how I can debug it myself. ANY real help is VERY welcome...

    Re: Acpi help!!!

    How old is the computer? Motherboard specs? Is it an OEM or a custom made? Any additional hardware you installed? Since it seems to be a kernel problem, due to changes included in the grub for kernel parameters, it might be hardware related.

    Re: Acpi help!!!

    What exactly happens when you try to boot without the acpi=off parameter?

    Re: Acpi help!!!

    The computer locks, and sits there until I manually turn it off (which I do not like to do... for obvious reasons)
    The screen says something like

    Running /scripts/init-bottom...done.
    3.548122 firewire_core: created device fw0: GUID 463f0200463f0300s400
    5.140033 floppy0:no floppy controllers found

    it hangs on firewire, or floppy.
    If I change the parameters and try to boot with acpi=off it will hang on the first boot usually.

    I am not sure what the problem is, but I don't think it really is the absence of a floppy or the firewire port's existence causing the problem.

    Thanks for attending to my issue I really appreciate this. it has been frustrating trying to research this issue... though I have learned a lot, and I think you will probably educate me more.

    Re: Acpi help!!!

    Ok!
    the screen shows something like

    running /scripts/init-bottom ...done.
    3.548122 firewire_core: created device fw0: GUID 463f0200463f0300s400
    5.140033 floppy0:no floppy controllers found

    It hangs either when the firewire line shows up, or the floppy.... though I think it isn't related to those...

    One other detail, that might be important, I do not have a battery in my computer, I just run it off the cord.
    Thanks

    Re: Acpi help!!!

    Is it a hang or a case of no graphics video (uninitialized video)? Can you Ctrl+Alt+F1 and get a text login screen? Have you tried booting with the nomodeset kernel parameter?

    Re: Acpi help

    Same problem has been happening to me since 11.04 (grub 1.99) with a HP DM4 laptop. It's a problem with grub setting video modes and DKMS. The only way I can reliably boot is with the kernel arg "acpi=off".

    Re: Acpi help

    @rj45, looks like the DM4 has the hybrid (dual video card) setup. There are numerous threads on this board about getting that kind of setup to work. Just googled and also found this: http://linux-hybrid-graphics.blogspo...-pavilion.html.

    Re: Acpi help

    I'm pretty sure I've done the Ctrl+Alt+F1... I tried all the key combos I could think of, but the computer just hangs there, the light for the HD just stays off (so it is inactive). I have tried nomodeset, as well, and xforcevesa... but I get the same result.
    So far the only parameter that has worked is acpi=off... but if you know one I haven't done, I would love to get this working. The strange thing is, when I have used puppylinux on this computer, I don't need acpi=off, and it boots fine. (I have used lupu and slacko )

    I have tried a lot of other distros and have the same issue... so I am pretty convinced it is something in the kernel.
    But... I am no programmer....
