Yes, the 10.04 desktop version works on netbooks. I don't know whether it will work specifically on your netbook; if it was made in 2010 then it might not.

The Gnome 2 desktop is a dead-end. You probably shouldn't get too familiar with it, because soon it will no longer be an option. It's unmaintained software. Gnome 3, Unity and other desktop environments will continue, but Gnome 2 will not.

10.04 won't make very efficient use of the vertical space of your netbook's wide screen, either; whereas 11.10 with Unity will give you about another vertical 70 pixels to use for content

Some of the other posters here have been claiming that Ubuntu 11.10 is too heavy for an Atom-based netbook with 1 GiB of RAM. Nothing could be further from the truth. 11.10 works well on my netbook.
