    upgrade ubuntu 11.04 to lubuntu 11.10 without CD

    Old laptop has broken CD drive, no USB boot capability, but runs Ubuntu 11.04 (Classic) fine.

    I want to upgrade to Lubuntu 11.10, need advice on the best route...
    Ubuntu 11.04 -> Ubuntu 11.10 -> Lubuntu 11.10?
    Ubuntu 11.04 -> Lubuntu 11.04 -> Lubuntu 11.10?
    Something else?

    don't upgrade, either keep 11.04 or repair media drive. and fresh install lubuntu 11.10.
    reason is, if you run in to problems u will not be able to do much with ur broken cd-rom drive. if it is working, why take the most probable break down risk?

    I think that it is better to upgrade from CD. However make sure that you will not lose your important files in your user directory.

    Run the "Remove Ubuntu" command string from here: http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/purelxdenatty

    ...then upgrade via "Update Manager"

    Hello and Welcome to Ubuntu Forum

    P.S.
    Please note that Upgrading sometimes fails and if you have slow internet connection, that will be a pain in the neck. Just make sure to backup all your files before anything you may want to try.

    By the way, do you have separate /home partition?

    How old is your machine?

    You do have a valid point
    However, let's try to be as positive as possible and provide new users with more options/choices just a suggestion!

    It's a tad disappointing that no-one thinks it's a good idea to upgrade an existing Ubuntu system to Lubuntu - I'd hoped that would be the easy way forward.

    But thanks to all for the advice: PLOP turned out to be the basis of the solution. Used PLOP, booted from a floppy, to boot Lubuntu from the USB, and did a fresh install.

    suggestion accepted,
    actually, I see many threads filled with problems after upgrading,
    and I prefer to do a clean install to avoid problems. but I would have tried to suggest him a better option,
    thanks for advice.

    I couldn't agree more. I'm totally with you in this. I too have seen many threads with lots of problems and I've never done any upgrade but willing too for the sake of learning

    I'm sorry that you are disappointed but we usually offer the best advice to other users based on our own experience or based on what we see here on the forum and I'm telling you, we've seen lots of threads for users who had problems with that. I'm not saying Upgrading is BAD idea because I've also seen some users with successful upgrade.

    With your condition, changes of success could be slim. In case something goes wrong, you'll be in a hard situation while Clean New Installation is much better and advisable

    I'm very glad to know that. Plop is amazing indeed

    If everything is ok and you don't have any further question, kindly mark your thread as Solved

    Thank you

    P.S.
    Let me know if you need any help, please
