Red face Ubuntu Update Failed: Locked out of my encrypted drive with all my school files

I really need help urgently, as I now have late grades because I couldn't get access to some files I needed for a school assignment.

So to start. I was running a fairly recent install of Ubuntu 11.04, and I finally decided to update to the latest version via the distribution upgrade screen. When the update completed, it had some issues and upon reboot it hangs on the start up screen with no error message or anything, just some of the usual stuff (loading pulse audio... etc.)

This normally wouldn't be a big deal to me, because I would just use a live CD to transfer the files to my Windows partition or whatever, but I can't get to my files because they are encrypted, and I cannot figure out how to de-encrypt them from a live CD.

The type of encryption I am using is whatever the install option is to have your home drive encrypted.

Help would be greatly appreciated, either in de-encrypting the files or in rescuing the install.

Some Google magic, and here you go:

    http://lmgtfy.com/?q=ubuntu+decrypt+home

Hope from now on you'll keep a backup.

The problem with this solution is it require that dang passphrase that Ubuntu generates. Unfortunately I didn't save this.

It looks to me that my only option may be in resurrecting the Ubuntu install. Got any ideas on how do that?

I actually did keep backups, on my desktop computer. But the Ubuntu install got messed up when I attempted to add a graphics card, and I couldn't fix it either.

I feel like I'm still in that stage in my Linux nerdom where I have enough skill/knowledge to create many problems, but yet not enough to fix most of them.

Yes, we DO mind -- about your repeated bumping. The rule around here is no more often than once every 24 hours.

So basically, you encrypted your drive, didn't bother to record the key in a safe place, went ahead and did a Distro upgrade -- knowing that you had no backup of the data on your drive -- and NOW you're distressed that you can't get to your data! Right?

This is what encryption is for -- keeping folks out of your data.

There is no way around the encryption; if there was, there wouldn't be any point in doing it in the first place.
    Ubuntu 14.04, Mint 17; MS Win 8.1.
