pptp and search domain

I have successfully set up a VPN on my Ubuntu 10.10 host and can connect to it using my iPhone all fine and Dandy, except for one thing: I cannot use DNS shortnames. For example I can connect to "intranet.localdomain.com" (or to its IP addres, 10.0.0.2) but not to just "intranet".

There is no way to set network options on the iPhone for the VPN connection so I was hoping there was someway to tell the server to tell the clients which search domain they should be using? Can anyone help?
