Login screen - how does this work?

Apologies in advance for the stupid question. Previously I have only used ubuntu and variants in a VM or liveCD/USB.

I just installed Lubuntu on a IBM T42. It definitely meets the minimum requirements. The install went smoothly. I elected to create a user account and password.

When I booted up for the first time. I am presented with a screen which has a box for the User. So I enter the username. Then it replaces it with a box for the Password. So I enter the password. Then when I press enter, it just goes back to a blank User: box! No error message or anything.

I'm sure I'm missing something obvious, if someone could point me in the right direction that would be great.

    Thanks in advance!
