Persistent live is still 'only' for testing. I think that it is not as stable as an installed system regarding updates and upgrades.

The md5sum can be downloaded from
    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuHashes
and should be compared to the output of the following command
    Code:
    md5sum ubuntu-11.04-desktop-i386.iso # or
    md5sum ubuntu-11.04-desktop-amd64.iso

Yes, click 'check'!. You might be prompted to enter your password too. This way your present version of Ubuntu will be updated with security updates, bug-fixes and other improvements of the software. If updates are found, the 'install updates' button can be selected. Click that the receive and install the updates!

But stay away from the 'upgrade' button at the top, unless you have a recent backup!

Re: how to open files from ext. hard drive?

    In a few days ago,
    I clicked update,
and while 11.04 was getting updated, closed lid of this netbook, and opened lid again, monitor was blank,
and power button did not work,
so unplugged ac adapter, and plugged it again, turned netbook on,
this message was on monitor; "low graphic mode, you have to configure"

i could not figured this out, so
    reinstalled 11.04.

That is too bad! My experience is that updating within a version is safe.

What happens when you close the lid of your netbook? It can be set to different actions (lock screen, sleep, hibernate, poweroff ...)?
Could closing the lid interfere with the updating process?

Of course it could be something that your update installed, that created problems. It is important that you run at least the security updates, so I hope that you dare use the updating utility.

nautilius is the file manager by default in 11.04 or 11.10 ubuntu.

if you go to the go menu in 11.10 and choose the go menu and home it will bring up nautilus

    or from terminal you type

    Code:
    nautilus
