    Going to install ubuntu 11.10?

    Hi All,

I am using ubuntu 11.04 in my laptop. Going to upgrade it on ubuntu 11.10. Please let me know which one is the best method..

Boot from live CD and install or direct package upgrade?

There is no best way method or route. If your internet connection is fast and stable, upgrade using the Update Manager. It will save you time and effort of downloading and burning a CD. If not, download the ISO file. I don't know what the 'direct package upgrade' is (is there an indirect package upgrade?), but if you feel confident it might work, go that way.

PS: A more descriptive thread title would have been nice.

    Good luck with the upgrade.

Re: Going to install ubuntu 11.10?

If you tinkered with 11.04 a lot you may want to do a new install of 11.10 just to clean it up a bit. I upgraded on my PC but did a new install on my laptop. I tinkered a lot on my PC with themes, icons, window managers and such which doesn't work great after upgrading to 11.10, so I'm going to fresh install it on the PC too. I wouldn't do it if I didn't think it was worth it. In my experience 11.10 functions way better out of the box than I ever got 11.04 to work after lots of configuring.

I would say backup your data and do a fresh install IMO.

Also make sure you try it out first using a Live version or USB install etc.

either way a fresh install i always think is the least problematic.

    good luck

Re: Going to install ubuntu 11.10?

Upgrading with a Live USB/CD can have unsuspected consequences, so watch out. When I upgraded Ubuntu Natty to Xubuntu Oneiric using a Live USB, it all worked okay, but it completely reinstalled MySQL and Postgres, dropping all my databases in the process. In short, if you upgrade like this, backup anything that's not in your home directory you can't afford to lose.
