Why my new Ubuntu is so slow?

I have been using XP, it was working okay, but then I decided to install Ubuntu. Now I have dual boot system and Ubuntu is very slow. Can you tell me, how to make it faster? Is it actually possible?

upgrade the memory card to at least 1GB.
and also important, how did you install Ubuntu? inside windows or separate partition?

Personally I'd run Lubuntu on that spec. I've run it on less RAM & a CPU of the same speed.

I have 2Gb of RAM in the box I'm thinking of now & I still run Lubuntu. It's lightning fast.

Considering that you are using a Pentium M with the minimum amount of RAM for Ubuntu, I would also suggest that you swith to Lubuntu. You should additionally consider upgrading your RAM.

I have Ubuntu on separate partition. Okay, thanks for suggestion! I will switch to Lubuntu. I though that all Unix systems are very lightweight. I am not sure if it is possible to upgrade to 1GB, because this laptop is from 2004

Debian Squeeze runs great with Gnome even on lower specs.

Whether a UNIX system is 'lightweight' or not depends on how many programs/services are needed to run in order to provide the desired functionality. Keep in mind that a recent version of Ubuntu is geared toward much more modern hardware than Windows XP.

    Lubuntu is a good bet.
    Not the cupcakes!
    Trust me.
