If you already have Ubuntu installed, installing lubuntu-desktop is probably the lowest traffic; you've already got some stuff (like the kernel & libraries) installed. You change which DE you use when you log in.

Otherwise, just download an iso at night. You can probably spread the download over several nights if you prefer, especially if you use a torrent.

Since everyone else is tossing in their two cents, here is mine. Back up all of the stuff that you cannot live with out. Then download Lubuntu (11.10 is the latest). Make a startup disk with a CD or flash drive and try it out on your machine. You will discover that your old machine has new life. If you like what you see, install it.

    +1 for music via terminal

Create a .bash_aliases file in your home directory (if it doesn't exist already - there are several how-tos on the forum about bash_aliases)

    add this alias:
    alias music='mplayer -really-quiet -shuffle /path/to/your/music/files/*mp3orwhatever'
as mentioned before, the * wildcard allows bash to play any file in the folder
so when you open a terminal and enter the alias "music" your music will be played without any output to the screen, and the songs will be shuffled - mplayer has all manner of arguments and options - man mplayer

The specs for your hardware aren't all that bad... could definitely use another 512megs of ram - other than that, though, it shouldn't be too bad at all.

    One word, Lubuntu, period.

I have installed LXDE (Mint 9) on 12 years old almost dead laptop and it worked.

I have installed Lubuntu 11.10 on P4 with 242MB RAM and it worked.

With 512MB and Lubuntu, you don't even need to upgrade your RAM. The default applications are too light too so no worries at all. Talking from experience here.

One way to find out my words are correct or not: try it yourself

I would use something like this:

    http://crunchbanglinux.org/

Much smaller, faster, and they are very supportive of any issues that arise too..

And it is Debian.. so no radical changes happening either..

Have a look and if you need any question, please let me know. I'm one of Lubuntu Team and I'll be very glad to help.
Again with such hardware of yours, you just need to install Lubuntu and don't worry about anything. I'm not saying it will be SUPER fast but ... try and see yourself

You're one of the team? Ten points to you sir! Very nice piece of work, Lubuntu. It's come on in leaps and bounds. I award you twelve internets, to be shared equally amongst the team!
