Re: Ubuntu and the asus zenbook (UX31)

I have found this thread indispensable for using Ubuntu with my zenbook. I know that if I read through the last few pages, I'll get up to date info about any solutions to problems. And I only have to go as far back as I need.

Besides, if someone wants up to date info in a short read: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AsusZenbook appears to be updated regularly as info comes up on this thread (though it probably lags behind a bit)

I mean seriously. We have 2013 and the forum software allows to create one thread per issue. Not one thread for ALL issues. This thread has > 150 pages and is completely unreadable & unusable.

Please stop people from still adding new issues to it & encourage opening separate threads for separate issues.
The reason I like this thread is because I'm subscribed to it. I don't want to subscribe to get alerts on all Asus related questions. I'm sorry that nobody has answered some of your other questions though. It's not a very big community (those using our specific laptop). Perhaps you can post links to your new threads here to get more attention? Shouting at us probably won't help much though. This system has been working well for us for a long time.

    ----------

I have my own question -- microphone noise. I have so much noise in my mic. People always complain when I use Hangouts / Skype / Google Voice etc. Has anybody had this problem?

    Thanks.

Re: Ubuntu and the asus zenbook (UX31)

    hi all,

with this thread being the closest to what I am trying to find out, last resort when my keywords to google is not enough.

i was just handed over a new laptop Asus X450CA, it said that it is also touch screen, so having a 12.04 in it, i tried installing the uTouch and xCal. apparently after running the installation, the calibration just said that there is no calibratable device... is this my dead end or has anyone worked around this yet?

    TIA

I upgrade kernel to 3.12.0-031200-generic and I have not had any problems with wifi.

Re: Ubuntu and the asus zenbook (UX31)

Ok so after more then a year experiencing shutdowns when unplugging the charger or when plugging it back, i found a solution online.
(and it works for me on 100% on the time).
    (i'm a ux21 owner)
I purchased a screwdriver to open my ux21 from ebay, then found the battery and the battery cabel that connects it to the board,
i unplugged it, waited a minute and plugged it back. (really simple, no reasons to be afraid).
After turning back on the computer, the issue is gone!!

    Hope it helps

Wait, what? Really? Can you please post the source of this? Has anybody tried this? Why would it work? What are the risks?

If you look here, they say the following:

Yes, this is definitely a product of that old memory controller problem. If you're experiencing this bug, the only solution is to find a torx T5, open the case, and disconnect the battery for a moment. This is a hardware problem more than it is a software problem.
Opening the case is fairly easy. There is a useful description with pictures here: http://www.ski-epic.com/2012_asus_ze...mbly_teardown/
You don't have to remove the battery. Just pull straight up on the connector to the mainboard. There's a helpful little black pull tab for this.

Wow. If this works, I'll be so happy. The little spike of fear I get every time my power cord falls out is inching me to an early grave.

I tried it myself today. Opening the Zenbook is easy (if you have a T5 screwdriver). And this is the cable connecting the battery and the board:

Unplugging it was not that easy. (Perhaps they used some glue? Or it was simply stuck.) You have to pull it straight up. I was really worried to damage the board if I use to much force, but in the end I managed to unplug it. Now everything seems to work fine.
(Disclaimer: I have no idea what I'm talking about - do everything at your own risk - but I hope this picture and comment is nevertheless useful.)
