Re: Ubunutu and the asus zenbook (UX31)

It looks as if the important things will just work in Ubuntu 12.04 :

According to the changelog (http://changelogs.ubuntu.com/changel...7.26/changelog), the newest kernel (3.2.0-17.26, based on 3.2.6) enables RC6 by default and disables deep RC6 for Sandy Bridge.
I booted the kernel without custom DSDT and without any (custom) kernel parameters. Temperatures / fan behaviour confirms that RC6 is enabled.

Bluetooth works, too. At least scanning for devices works. There's an open bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...ux/+bug/916319
Can someone confirm that bluetooth works with the current precise kernel?

For 3.2.0-16.25, there's also "x86, mce, therm_throt: Don't report power limit and package level thermal throttle events in mcelog". So those messages should be gone.

The ASPM fix is already included a while, almost since the beginning of the Ubuntu 3.2 kernel series.

Now the suspend script and the touchpad (especially Sentelic) seem to be the only remaining problems. Are the ath9k crashes gone?

I think a major rework of the Wiki page will be necessary soon

    Regards
    Aaron

Good question - this thread is huge so it can be hard to figure out the current status. However, reading through a few recent posts it does looks like fixes for the biggest issues are close to being submitted upstream.

It also looks like there is no need to worry about patching the DSDT. It even appears that the suspend related scripts aren't needed with the 3.3 kernel.

Therefore, it would seem that an Elantech UX31 will pretty much work out-of-the-box with kernel 3.3.

Those with Sentelic touch pads unwilling to build their own kernels will have to wait for the driver to be included in the kernel.. I'm not aware of any ETA for this.

(remember that rc6 support is only about battery life - and if the rc6 related patch gets put into the 3.3 or 3.4 kernel, we will have better battery life with a simple tweak (addition of a boot parameter))

Better summaries of the current situation would be greatly appreciated! (EDIT: like Aaron's, above!)

    Quick summary of my experience:

Good battery life with RC6 enabled.
No DSDT fix, and I have not had a single shutdown.
    HDMI works
Wireless works fine for me without and issue.
I have a sentelic touch pad, and compiling in the driver, it works better than in windows.
Elantic touch pad no experience with.
    Bluetooth, I have not used.
The Ethernet adapter works out of the box for me on 3.2.6.
    Scripts for proper sleep required.

I think this covers the majority but reply if you looking for more information.

    Hey guys,
I just updated to 3.3rc4 and uploaded to my site wurkwith.us/kernel/index.php. Feel free to download it from there.

So the Sentelic touchpad is to prefer? I've e-mailed my favorite webshop to see if they know what kind of touchpad they have in the computers in stock.
Does the Sentelic come with the newer versions of this ultrabook?

OT: How do you like the keyboard? I've read that it's not that great, and to test it IRL at a store I'll have to drive 90 kilometers to the nearest store.

Oh, that's easy just compile compile your own kernel

As far I understood the Elantech touchpad is the better choice as multi-touch features are supported from kernel 3.2.x on, for reference see: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/As...ntech_Touchpad

I've asked earlier in the thread if theres any way to distinguish between the two touchpads other than starting up the zenbook, but unfortunately no answer so far.

Ah okay. How's the battery time with your kernel?
