Sorry, new driver version (026) available for download:

    Code:
    wget http://r8168.googlecode.com/files/r8168-8.026.00.tar.bz2
    tar xvf r8168-8.026.00.tar.bz2
    Then continue with "cd"

    Re: 11.10 wired network problem

    when running wget, I got:

Failed: name or service not known.
wget: unable to resolve host address 'r8168.googlecode.com'

since I can't connect the the internet from that os, do I need to download the tar on my laptop and then sneakernet it onto my desktop?

    Thanks for the help!

    Re: 11.10 wired network problem

The first immediately obviously wrong thing on annalee's machine when I got here was that the r8168 file in the modules dir ended in .o instead of .ko. I renamed it as appropriate and attempted to load it forcibly and verbosely. This failed with "invalid module format". Renaming the backed up r8169 from .bak to .ko also failed in this way. So I reinstalled the kernel, rebooted and things were happy again.

Then I tried installing from the new tarball. This time the module was at least correctly named, but it still failed.

Just reinstalled the kernel deb again.

    Try it with:

    Code:
    sudo make
    sudo cp src/r8168.ko /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/kernel/drivers/net/
    sudo depmod -a
    sudo modprobe -v r8168

    Re: 11.10 wired network problem

    Hi again!

Rebuilding manually did work, with the following additions:

    Code:
    sudo reboot
    sudo modprobe -r r8169
    sudo modprobe -r r8168
    sudo modprobe r8168
    sudo update-initramfs -u -k $(uname -r)
    sudo reboot
    #profit
initramfs had to be regenerated before the blacklist on r8169 would actually take effect, which had us confused for a few minutes (both drivers loaded). But once we finally got it to stay dead, full network functionality appears to be restored (tested it by trying to install supertuxkart--spectacular fail under r8169; worked just fine under 68).

Thanks again for all the help!

Thumbs up Re: 11.10 wired network problem

This is a great thread. Especially the part about being able to download the r8168 driver from googlecode. I had never heard of that.

I hate r8169. It gives lots of people tons of problems, but for some reason it is never fixed. What's up with that? There must be hundreds of bugs concerning it on Launchpad. I still cannot use r8169 with the 3.1.4 kernel in Arch Linux, even though I saw some speculation a few months ago that it would be fixed in 3.1.

    Hi Tim,

does the procedure work with kernel 3.1 somehow? You can try it either with "sudo make" and moving the module,

    Code:
    sudo ./autorun.sh
    or as "root"
    Code:
    sudo su
    sh ./autorun.sh
    exit
I am following (alone ) the Issue table there and tried all variants in virtual machines (except Precise Pre-Alpha, have to try it soon).

Thanks for the tips. I haven't gotten around to trying the driver in Arch, yet. It will probably have to wait until tomorrow.

I am amazed, but r8169 is now working for me in Arch with the 3.1 kernel. I tested yesterday, and it still does not work with the 3.0 kernel in Ubuntu. Maybe they really are getting it fixed. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
