    Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot) released!!

    Kate Stewart, Ubuntu Release Manager at Canonical announced, "The Ubuntu team is pleased to announce Ubuntu 11.10, code-named "Oneiric Ocelot". 11.10 continues Ubuntu's proud tradition of integrating the latest and greatest open source technologies into a high-quality, easy-to-use Linux distribution."

    In addition to Ubuntu 11.10 being released the following new releases of derivative distributions are also available: Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Edubuntu, Mythbuntu, Ubuntu Studio, and Lubuntu!

    Ubuntu 11.10 is also now available on two new ARM community-supported
    ports--AC100 (Toshiba Tegra 2 Netbook) and MX5 (Freescale i.MX53 QuickStart)

    Ubuntu (11.10) Open Week: October 17-21, 2011

    Ubuntu Open Week is a week of IRC tuition and Q+A sessions all about getting involved in the rock-and-roll world that is the Ubuntu community. We organise this week for the beginning of a new release cycle to help new contributors get involved.

    Ubuntu Open Week will take place on October 17-21, 2011 from 1400 UTC to 1800 UTC in the #ubuntu-classroom and #ubuntu-classroom-chat IRC Channels on irc.freenode.net.

    Ubuntu ServerGuide community review 100%

    Ahmed Kamal of the Canonical Community Team announces community review of the Ubuntu Server Guide is now complete. In this announcement he thanks the reviewers and gives links to the not only the server guide but to the collaboration effort itself.

    Getting involved with Ubuntu Development - how easy is it really?

    Daniel Holbach of the Canonical Community Team wants to know how well the Ubuntu development documentation is known and working. He sends out a survey to see how much is know and where it can be improved.

    Keeping The Feedback Train Rolling

    Jono Bacon, Ubuntu Community Manger thanks all Ubuntu members who have responded to the survey. He also thanks those who have emailed him directly. Bacon continues to encourage more feedback from the community and writes, "I am looking forward to presenting this feedback soon and working with our community leaders to help drive some solutions forward to ensure our community remains as fun, inspiring and productive as possible."

    Ubuntu 11.10 Development update

    Daniel Holbach, Canonical Community Team, post the last of the Ubuntu 11.10 updates as this latest release rolls out the door. In this update he gives links to two site that do a great job explaining and visualising what's new iin Ubuntu 11.10. Holback discusses events which include summaries of the release parties and links to the upcoming Ubuntu Open Week. Holbach reminds people of the development survey and celebrates everyone's contributions. To see a visualization of those who contributed he also adds a collage he created. Also in this update is how to get involved, where you to find something to work on and how to contact Ubuntu developers to get your questions answered.

    Precise open for development

    Matthias Klose, software engineer at Canonical announced on Friday, Oct 13, 2011, "Precise is now open for development, with syncs from testing starting shortly. The development version starts with an updated GCC (4.6.x, Linaro 2011-10) and binutils (2.22 branch), gnat-4.6 as the default gnat, python2.6 dropped from the list of supported python 2.x versions,merged dpkg, debhelper and cdbs, the swig version updated from 1.3 to 2.0, jpeg8 as the default jpeg version.
    In preparation for the LTS, syncs will run from the Debian testing distribution.
    If you require a sync request from unstable, please file a sync request (or sync on your own)."

    Laura Czajkowski, on behalf of the LoCo Council post how those wishing to set up al LoTeam in their area can do so. Czajkowski reviews naming conventions, and setting up the various team resources. She also notes that if you need help to contact the LoCo Council for help.

    Welcome to BerliOS projects

    Matthew Revell writes, "It's sad to read that BerliOS will close in December, after nearly twelve years of serving open source projects. One fewer project hosting site means that the open source world is that bit poorer."

    While he notes that this is sad for the open source world he adds that those how have been will be looking for a new place to host the projects chould they consider Launchpad, then the launchpad team is there to help them with their transition.

    Accessibility Blog: Oneiric Ocelot

    The Accessibility team discusses the major changes made to the release with the new default of 2D for accessibility profiles. The post discusses usage of the screen reader, keyboard navigation, the on-screen keyboard, Compiz zoom functionality, the accessibility settings dialog and some outstanding bugs. The post wraps up with an overview from the personas that they've developed for testing and an onward look to 12.04.

    Canonical Design Team: So you've decided to make an Ubuntu promotional video

    The Canonical Design Team has put out a new promotional video for the 11.10 release using all open source tools (and font!). In this video the Design Team shares the tools they used to create the video in an effort to encourage others to create similar promotional videos. They're also asking the community to help translate their video into as many languages as possible.

    Jono Bacon: Weekly Canonical Community Team Meetings Now On IRC

    Jono Bacon says, "...from next week we will be doing exactly this. From next week, our meetings will take place on #ubuntu-meeting every Tuesday at 3pm UTC. I have added the weekly meeting to the Fridge Calendar."

    He also adds, "To be completely clear, this IRC meeting will be in the same form as the meetings we have been doing each week -- it is not intended to replace the Community Council, Technical Board or other meetings -- it is just a means for the team to sync up, but with the added value of the wider community being welcome to watch the session and feel free to chime in and contribute."
