Red face Too Much Problems with Ubuntu 11.10 after an upgrade

First it started with random shutdowns. Did several searches to solve the problem but it led to another... I have so far spend the whole of today and yesterday evening trying to solve this problem. I would like to install fresh version but I got so much on this computer that, it will take months for me to get it to the stage it is currently at.

Right now, it seems the random shutdown is no-more but you never know... it was alway "random". But another big problem is getting my 3 graphix to work. My computer is now SLOW. I could not boot to either lightdm or gdm directly. I always have to press Ctr+Alt+F2 then
    Code:
    sudo gdm
before gdm comes on. I tried with lightdm but it boots a screen with *checking battery status. I followed some suggestions but problem persists.

    My
    Code:
    /etc/X11/xorg.conf
    gives
    PHP Code:
    # xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)

    # This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using

I know this is a lot of information but I figured the more I give, the more someone is able to help.

    Summary:
    Please help fix these problem:
    1. Random boots (hasn't happened in the last 3 hrs or so so I hope this problem is now fixed)
    2. Boot to lightdm
    3. Enable graphic card for 3d rendering.
    4. Be able to use Cairo-dock again.

    Thanks.

One problem solved. I was able to boot directly to gdm without the need to enter
    Code:
    sudo gdm
at the boot screen... thus the problem of the computer getting stack at *checking battery status is solve. Here is how: change lightdm to gdm in
    Code:
    edit /etc/X11/defaul-display-manager
Now what's left is to be able to use cairo dock and proper graphic. I am using lenovo x61 ati graphic

Are you sure that you have an ATI graphics since ThinkWiki states that the X61 is available only with Intel cards?

Re: Too Much Problems with Ubuntu 11.10 after an upgrade

According to the log file, you also have Nvidia graphics.

So, you have switchable graphics, right?

I believe that you have to disable one or the other to get graphics to work. Since Intel is the onboard, you may have to disable the NVidia graphics -- and you probably need to use the BIOS settings to do that.
    Ubuntu 20.04, Mint 19.10; MS Win10 Pro.
Will not respond to PM requests for support -- use the forums.

I believe I only have intel graphic. The Nvidia was probably there because I install the nvidia-common and nvidia-setting then startx generated that file for me. I since changed it reflect intel device alone.

    Thanks for the suggestion.

For the Cairo dock issue, you probably need to use their ppa version. See this blog entry:
