11.10 Authentication for proxy server

I faced problems with Ubuntu while connecting to a proxy server from UBUNTU 11.10
I have tried using network manager but apply system wide won't work.
The software center or update manager doesn't ask for proxy authentication and firefox cant detect the system proxy settings.
I have tried editing gconf http_proxy by giving the proxy authentication manually and tried downloading via apt-get but it was of no use...
When i manually gave proxy settings in firefox it asked for authentication and worked fine.
What can be done here??(please help me out)

I'm unfortunately facing the same problem. It's strange because proxy authentication was working just fine on 11.04 and now we have this problem...
