If at first you don't succeed, try until you bleed
I just tried one of my old accounts and it seemed to work fine for me... maybe it's back up now?
Hotmail used to be very good, until MS bought it.

My hotmail was hacked and people were getting junk adware type email supposedly coming from me. Fix was to change the password. These emails never showed in my sent messages. I first noticed them when some contacts in my address's book were bad and these emails were kicked back to the inbox as un-deliverable, but did not care until some real contacts emailed me back and asked what this stuff was.
Fix was change passwords. I think someone got the password from one of the numerous online sites where I would register my email and use the same password as for my hotmail account.
it was not very sophisticated attack, people would get clickable links.
I went back and found one, this here was one of the links
http://toscochimica.com/find11.html
which chrome gives me a warning that the site has malware.
