Gnome shell uses fallback, Unity has Acceleration

When I log into gnome, my graphics are in fallback mode but when I log into unity I get basic hardware accel. I've tried reinstalling gnome via apt-get remove --purge, but still can't get it to work. It worked so easily on my work machine I don't know what I did wrong.

In Unity System Info the experience is standard and the driver section is blank. But in gnome, or gnome classic it is fallback.

Not sure what else to check or try to get it working. Any clues?

    As always, thx!

I had a totally botched beta upgrade. Reinstalled from release CD and all is well. No idea how I got into this state but it's over now.
