11.10 and Alexandria Book Collection Manager

    Hello,

I just installed 11.10 and I noticed that Alexandria Book Collection Manager is no longer available in repositories. I went to their website and downloaded deb file. But Ubuntu Software Center will not install the program. It says:

    Dependency is not satisfiable: libgnome2-ruby (>= 0.17)

When I try to do this in terminal I get the following errors.

With new gnome looks like old libraries are not available.

    Code:
    Selecting previously deselected package alexandria.
(Reading database ... 242569 files and directories currently installed.)
    Unpacking alexandria (from alexandria_0.6.6-1_all.deb) ...

    Errors were encountered while processing:

Is there workaround? Is there anything I can do?

    Thank you!

I have the same issue, and I did notice that Alexandria seems to be in the process of a rewrite here: http://palatin.as/

When I try to install gtkpalatina per the installation instructions, it also has issues with the same three libraries.

The libraries were apparently obsolete, and removed in 11.10.

Re: 11.10 and Alexandria Book Collection Manager

These are the three that continue to be an issue:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
gtkpalatina : Depends: libgnome2-ruby (>= 0.19.2) but it is not installable
Depends: libglade2-ruby (>= 0.19.2) but it is not installable
Depends: libgconf2-ruby (>= 0.19.2) but it is not installable

Re: 11.10 and Alexandria Book Collection Manager

Looks like both projects are inactive. Last update for Palatina was August 2010.
Is it possible to rebuild these from source code? Will this still require these libraries?

I spend lots of time cataloging all our library. Is there an alternative? Can I export it to some other software?

Re: 11.10 and Alexandria Book Collection Manager

    I've found some alternative products...

    These two I'm looking at:
Tellico (open source via standard methods)
Readerware from (http://www.readerware.com/index.php - pay product)

Both of these can search internet sources (e.g. Amazon).
Both will search a list of things (e.g. ISBN)
I created a list like this:
    terminal
    cd .alexandria/(book collection)
    ls *yaml | cut -d "." -f 1 >$HOME/Desktop/book.txt

Then used the file Desktop/book.txt to populate the list in the product.
Tellico would only take 100 entries at a time. It also wouldn't find some books, but on subsequent searches for them would.

Readerware seems more mature and thoughtful.

Others that I haven't investigated yet:
    http://www.collectorz.com/book/ (pay)
http://www.librarything.com/ (free online social media site)

Hope this helps. If you look at any, please post your opinions back as it may save us all some time.

Tellico can actually import Alexandria collection. Very cool

A word of warning to those of you importing from Alexandria: multiline comments are not correctly imported, so you have to set those manually. You can find all your books with multiline comments by running

    grep \|- *.yaml

    in your ~/.alexandria directory.

Fixed for the next release of Tellico, KDE bug 289022.
