Exclamation Can't login as administrator in ubuntu 11.10

    Hello,

I have just upgraded from Ubuntu 11.04 to Ubuntu 11.10 and when trying to log in with my old user account (administrator) it brings me back to the log in screen. I don't get any type of error it's just does as if it's loading the desktop and then goes back to log in screen.

I'm currently logged in as a guest but I have restrictions and I can't modify too much.

    Anyone could help me please?

    Thanks

    hit CTRL + ALT + F1

see if you can login there

You can hit CTRL + ALT + F7 to go back to normal screen

    Same problem to me.

Yes I can login when in non-graphical mode (CTRL + ALT + F1), but I can't login normally. It's extremely annoying. Please help.

    Thanks in advance!

    I had the same issue.
Logging in a text console (Alt+Ctrl+F1 at the login screen) and issuing:
    sudo rm ~/.Xauthority
    solved the issue.
    I hope it helps.

    Solved x 2!!!

I had the same problems, but nothing I found online worked. I narrowed it down to a buggy .profile bash script in the home directory. I can reproduce the problem reliably. In my case, it was some bash code for Python pip code completion. More info in the link.

pankajso's solution of: sudo rm ~/.Xauthority
worked for me. I logged in remotely and issued that from the command line.

This also works for me.But I don't know why .Xauthority affects login, anyway I checked it and found it was an empty document.

Re: Can't login as administrator in ubuntu 11.10

    Hi,
I had the same problem, but none of above worked for me!
In fact it was just a permission issue, both /tmp and /home could not be accessed by users except root and guest.
It was only a chmod 777 for me.
Hope this info helps others too.
