Or if needed it is fairly easy to get back to the 'classic' gnome desktop as opposed to Unity.

You can just run this in a terminal:

sudo apt-get install gnome-session-fallback

Reboot and then select "Gnome Classic" on the login screen.

Also note: In order to make changes to the panel settings, you have to use alt+right click, instead of just a regular right click.

For 12.04 LTS version.

Install gnome-panel from Software Centre or synaptic.

From terminal.

sudo apt-get install gnome-panel

Logout and choose your session at login.
