hehe, i think they would add that to the "wishful thinking" bugs

anyway i myself still find unity more usable than gnome shell out of the box.

but glad to see GS easily installable for those that prefer it.

I hope that on a guided partition the swap partition will be the first partition instead the last. This would enhance the performance on mechanical hard disk drives greatly.

At that point I could move from mouse to keyboard and type a few characters of the program name, and all the programs with those characters in their name would appear. For example, typing "ed" brought up Text Editor, GIMP Image Editor, Configuration Editor, and more. I could use the tab key to move across the program names until I had selected the program that I wanted. Then I could press the enter key and start the program. Note that after my hands were on the keyboard they didn't leave it until the program had been started -- for a touch typist that was fast. I thought this feature represented good user interface design.

That feature is gone now. The tab key selects lenses, and I can't find any way to select a program without having my hand go back to the mouse. That is slower than before.
many good keyboard shortcuts for that:

    is that true?

why not report this? increasing performance is always priority.

zacktu, if you type "ed" and then press the down arrow twice you'll get to the list of applications.
You might also want to try Gnome-Do or Synapse, two applications that allow you to do very similar things with the keyboard but are quicker and more flexible (although I didn't try them with 11.10).

    I have already reported this:
    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/821728

The speed should increase ~33% (maybe a little more or less dependend on the disk) if the swap is at the beginning of the disk.

That already works for me. I guess it doesn't work for all hardware and is therefore a bug rather than a missing feature.

nice, i added myself to the bug.

Just the title could be more descriptive. Could you rephrase the title a bit so that people know that this is to increase performance, so that it grabs better their attention.
